Differing impacts of two major plant invaders on urban plant-dwelling spiders (Araneae) during flowering season

چکیده

Abstract Plant invasions can have major impacts on ecosystems and influence global species diversity. In Central Europe, Himalayan balsam ( Impatiens glandulifera ) American goldenrods Solidago canadensis S. gigantea are important invaders often establishing dense homogeneous stands, especially in urban other disturbed habitats. We investigated their plant-dwelling spiders (abundance, family structure, guild structure) potential spider prey items during flowering season within an urbanized landscape using a paired design comparing invaded native reference vegetation plots. general, had no significant the composition. Invasion of further effect total abundance item abundance. contrast, showed significantly increased crab (Thomisidae) while being less inhabited by web builders. negatively influenced free hunters running (Philodromidae) abundance, we found effects groups For balsam, was higher than stands. Notwithstanding that our results only represent snapshot system, they suggest large-scale removal goldenrod stands might local spiders. Management efforts should therefore be accompanied compensation measures to avoid disruptive communities.

The impacts of climate change and meteorological factors on pollen season indicators of allergenic plant taxa

Pollen respiratory allergies have been increasing in prevalence over the last two decades, partly as the result of the impact of climate change. For many allergenic trees, grass and weed species, increased pollen production and prolonged pollination period result in long-term increased abundance of pollen allergens in the atmosphere; earlier shifts of airborne pollen grains and prolonged exposu...

Effect of mulches on some characteristics of a drought tolerant flowering plant for urban landscaping

Mulches are relatively new landscape components and are becoming recognized for their environmental and aesthetic outcomes on urban landscapes especially in arid environments. However, the effects of mulches on landscape plants have not been extensively discussed. This study examined the effects of organic and inorganic mulches on the performance of a widely used herbaceous drought toleran...

Plant genetics: Fast flowering

Poplars are fast-growing trees of cool, temperate climates that find use in the manufacture of pulp, matches and packing cases. They are also widely grown for shelter and for ornamental purposes. Poplars are deciduous trees that flower in the spring soon after new leaves arise. Flowers develop from the axils of these leaves, and arise on short stems carrying a string of flowers (a catkin). They...

Polycomb repression of flowering during early plant development.

All plants flower late in their life cycle. For example, in Arabidopsis, the shoot undergoes a transition and produces reproductive flowers after the adult phase of vegetative growth. Much is known about genetic and environmental processes that control flowering time in mature plants. However, little is understood about the mechanisms that prevent plants from flowering much earlier during embry...
